Costa Rica is known as the Switzerland of the Americas and the Jewel of Central America. Its world of different topographical wonders and microclimates offers limitless activities and sights to take in. This ecological wonderland offers live volcanoes, fern gullies, rushing rivers, thick jungle forests, and pristine beaches that harmonize in a symphony of sights and wonders that will astound any vacationer.
Costa Rica's lush jungles are home to playful monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, numerous lizards, the world’s largest assortment of exotic birds, insects and butterflies, while the endangered sea turtles nest on both coasts and cloud forests protect elusive birds and jungle cats. Costa Rica is home to a rich variety of plants and animals. While the country has only about one tenth of one percent of the world's land mass, it contains 5% of the world's biodiversity. Over 800 types of bird can be found here, as well as over 100 species of mammal and thousands of plant species.
The national parks, oceans, beaches, land, and less traveled paths provide me than ample fun-filled excursions. Just some of the activites include swimming, fishing, sailing, surfing, hiking, kayakig, ecotourism, horseback riding, scuba diving, or just lounging on a beach soaking in the sun.
Costa Rica is seen as an example of political stability in the region, and is sometimes referred to as the "Switzerland of the Americas". Costa Rica disbanded its army in 1948, allowing the country to re-focus its energies on building high-quality education and health care programs. With a population of a little over four million, Costa Rica now boasts a high literacy rate that rivals most industrialized nations.
Costa Rica is a leader in establishing national parks and reserves. Approximately 27 percent of the country is protected. That is more than 622,000 hectares of irreplaceable rainforest, dry tropical forest, cloud forest, islands, volcanoes, hot springs, rivers, beaches, waterfalls, caves, wet-lands, and sites of historic or archeological importance.
